Ensure that legal agreements, contracts, and other critical documents remain tamper-proof and legally binding.
CertVera uses a combination of cryptography and Bitcoin’s blockchain to certify the authenticity of documents and media files. By leveraging the immutability of the blockchain, we ensure that once a document is certified, it cannot be altered without detection.
When you upload a document to CertVera, we generate a unique cryptographic hash of the document. This hash is like a digital fingerprint — even the slightest change to the document will produce a completely different hash, making tampering immediately detectable.
Once the hash is generated, we embed it into the Bitcoin blockchain using a special feature called OP_RETURN. This is a transaction field that allows us to store small amounts of data directly on the blockchain. Because the Bitcoin blockchain is immutable, once the hash is embedded, it cannot be changed or deleted. This ensures that the document’s certification is permanent and publicly verifiable.
Anyone can verify the document’s authenticity by generating a hash of the document and comparing it with the one stored on the blockchain. If the hashes match, the document is verified as authentic and unchanged. This verification process can be done directly on the CertVera platform or using any Bitcoin blockchain explorer.
